ArtPeers announces an open call for submissions of original, local music, through 01.21.10. The groundbreaking modern dance collective DITA (Dance in the Annex) will set new choreography to four of the submitted tracks. The musicians will perform live at Wealthy Theatre, accompanying DITA, and playing additional songs of their choice. Bands will receive professional audio/video recording and still images of the performance, to use as a stand-alone music video, and for promotional use.
The 04.21.10 event, called Trip The Light, benefits ArtPeers efforts to incorporate as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. “We can better serve local artists and the community, as a nonprofit organization [...]

I think this is awesome. In an effort to encourage support for local artists and encourage community, a group from the Wealthy Heights neighborhood has come up with ArtPeers. It will take place during the first weekend of ArtPrize, from September 25-27, in venues outside of the ArtPrize boundary. Artists will be paired with venues in Uptown (though other parts of GR aren’t out of the question) and will have their work displayed for everybody each day from 1 pm – 9 pm. Though there are currently no prizes, it will serve as an opportunity for both local venues and artists to participate in a large-scale art event that will coincide with events like ArtPrize, Destination 1111, Activesite, and the many other happenings. Grand Rapids is going to be glowing with art, and it will be glorious.
Though planning is still underway, there will be an online element. A blog about Grand Rapids art history is in the works, and will be built upon as time passes. Currently, venue surveying is underway, and artist registration will start Thursday August 13th. To register as a venue or artist, visit the ArtPeers website at www.artpeers.org. Spread the word to any venue or artist who may be interested, and tell EVERYBODY to get out and enjoy all of the great arts that Grand Rapids has to offer!
You can follow ArtPeers on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. Stay tuned to all of these sources for further updates!

Wealthy Heights

A little more than a decade ago, a movement started in Wealthy Heights to save the homes and buildings from a wrecking-ball fate. Neighbors banded together and worked with South East Economic Development (SEED) to save the Wealthy Theatre from demolition, and it was re-opened in 1998 after a more than $2 million renovation. A couple very entertaining events for a cause coming up!

On Sunday, June 7th, Uptown is sponsoring a presentation of Noises Off at the Circle Theatre. By the way, why the theaters in Uptown spelled theatre? Anyways, I hear the show is extremely funny. Tickets are $25, and proceeds go to Uptown to help with such events as Trolley Days, Shop Hop, and so on. Tickets are available directly from Urban Pharm, and they are even a tax write-off! Let us know if you want some tickets.
On Wednesday, June 3, the Wealthy St. Business Alliance is throwing a party for asparagus. Amy from Art of the Table was able to get her hands on the rights to show Asparagus: A Stalkumentary at the Wealthy Theatre (again with the spelling). She also worked her magic to get the producer/director to conduct a Q & A session after the film AND (get this) Mrs. Asparagus 1989 and the runner up! Businesses from Wealthy St. and beyond will be on hand with a variety of asparagus dishes, products, and information. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online in advance or at the box office. Proceeds go to the WSBA.
