Keep it local this holiday!

Shop LocalHere we are a week and a half away from the infamous Black Friday and two weeks from Cyber Monday. As we sift through our closets to see what we can re-gift, look at the naughty list to see who we can skimp on, and analyze the budget and credit card limits to see what we can spend, now is the perfect time to commit to keeping our holiday spending local. I know it can be tough to resist a good, old-fashioned stampede at the Wal-Mart at 5 am on a brisk post-Thanksgiving morning, but consider the benefits of buying your gifts at our fine local retailers (from Local First).

  • On average, 73% of money spent locally stays in the local economy. Alternatively, only 43% of money spent at non-local companies is recirculated in West Michigan.
  • Local goods, on average, don’t travel as far to reach the store. This means that there is less of an environmental impact.
  • Local business owners give more to local charities and non-profits than non-local business owners, strengthening our community.
  • Local business owners are vested in our community, and are more likely to invest in and care for our community than non-local owners.
  • Most new jobs are created by local businesses.
  • Products sold by local businesses tend to be more unique, making for very special gifts [...]

    Updated: ArtPeers

artpeersI think this is awesome. In an effort to encourage support for local artists and encourage community, a group from the Wealthy Heights neighborhood has come up with ArtPeers. It will take place during the first weekend of ArtPrize, from September 25-27, in venues outside of the ArtPrize boundary. Artists will be paired with venues in Uptown (though other parts of GR aren’t out of the question) and will have their work displayed for everybody each day from 1 pm – 9 pm. Though there are currently no prizes, it will serve as an opportunity for both local venues and artists to participate in a large-scale art event that will coincide with events like ArtPrize, Destination 1111, Activesite, and the many other happenings. Grand Rapids is going to be glowing with art, and it will be glorious.

Though planning is still underway, there will be an online element. A blog about Grand Rapids art history is in the works, and will be built upon as time passes. Currently, venue surveying is underway, and artist registration will start Thursday August 13th. To register as a venue or artist, visit the ArtPeers website at www.artpeers.org. Spread the word to any venue or artist who may be interested, and tell EVERYBODY to get out and enjoy all of the great arts that Grand Rapids has to offer!

You can follow ArtPeers on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. Stay tuned to all of these sources for further updates!

    Wealthy Heights

A little more than a decade ago, a movement started in Wealthy Heights to save the homes and buildings from a wrecking-ball fate. Neighbors banded together and worked with South East Economic Development (SEED) to save the Wealthy Theatre from demolition, and it was re-opened in 1998 after a more than $2 million renovation. [...]

Soup Tasting We’ve had a few days now to let all of the soup digest and to reflect on the soup tasting fundraiser for the Wealthy Street Business Alliance (WSBA). Keep an eye out for the WSBA to release a new website in the coming months. Amy from Art of the Table was kind enough to update the business directory on the website today to tie us over in the meantime. Art of the Table, along with Founders Brewing Company, provided the drinks for the evening to help wash down the deliciousness. The Wealthy St. Bakery stepped up to provide a fine selection of breads to soak up the scrumptious soups [...]

Soup TastingOn Saturday, March 21st, Urban Pharm will be joining community members and other businesses in Uptown at the soon-to-be-opened Electric Cheetah for a soup tasting fundraiser. More than a dozen restaurants, individuals, and other companies have signed up to make a soup for the event. Soups will be judged by a “celebrity” guest, and the winner will have their soup on the menu at the Electric Cheetah! Drinks will be provided, and the Wealthy St. Bakery will be donating breads to soak up the soupy goodness [...]
