Below are some photos taken throughout the weekend at various venues around Uptown (Facebook users will get a better slideshow here). Art, Green Week!

Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment

Pardon my absence from our blog as of late. I’ve been working hard on ArtPeers, ArtPrizeGR.com, fall classes at GVSU, and (of course) Urban Pharm. I have been extremely excited about art and its impact on our community lately, and I hope you all make a point to get out and see everything that ArtPeers, ArtPrize, ActiveSite, Destination 1111, and the rest of the great arts events have to offer.

Also, this week is Green Week in Grand Rapids. Literally, today is part of Green Week. Unfortunately, time constraints won’t allow us to participate in Park(ing) Day this year, but we will definitely be downtown to check it all out. Here is a flier:

ArtPrizeGRVideo storyteller Andy Dragt, of Rapid Growth Media’s RGTV and beyond, has created a cool little blog to keep tabs on what is happening with ArtPrize and ArtPeers. He has kindly asked me to contribute, so I hope to add my two cents (if I have it and don’t give it to the guy who is “hungry and needs to buy some peanut butter and jelly from the Wealthy Market.” He always uses that line, but I never see him with a PB&J.) Anyways, check the blog out at www.ArtPrizeGR.com to say up-to-date on what is going on.

My first trip on The Rapid

Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment

On a rainy evening a couple weeks ago, a group of friends and I headed downtown on The Rapid for the Electronic Music Night. It was my first time riding on our bus system. I find myself telling others to take mass transit, yet I had never ridden the Rapid! [...]

Updated: ArtPeers

Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | 3 Comments

artpeersI think this is awesome. In an effort to encourage support for local artists and encourage community, a group from the Wealthy Heights neighborhood has come up with ArtPeers. It will take place during the first weekend of ArtPrize, from September 25-27, in venues outside of the ArtPrize boundary. Artists will be paired with venues in Uptown (though other parts of GR aren’t out of the question) and will have their work displayed for everybody each day from 1 pm – 9 pm. Though there are currently no prizes, it will serve as an opportunity for both local venues and artists to participate in a large-scale art event that will coincide with events like ArtPrize, Destination 1111, Activesite, and the many other happenings. Grand Rapids is going to be glowing with art, and it will be glorious.

Though planning is still underway, there will be an online element. A blog about Grand Rapids art history is in the works, and will be built upon as time passes. Currently, venue surveying is underway, and artist registration will start Thursday August 13th. To register as a venue or artist, visit the ArtPeers website at www.artpeers.org. Spread the word to any venue or artist who may be interested, and tell EVERYBODY to get out and enjoy all of the great arts that Grand Rapids has to offer!

You can follow ArtPeers on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. Stay tuned to all of these sources for further updates!

Grand Rapids Electronic Music Night

Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | 2 Comments

CrowdUpdate: What a great night. A group of friends and I took the Rapid down to Rosa Parks Circle as the rain poured down. It just happened to be my first time on the Rapid, but more on that later. We thought the rain would have slowed people down, but it just made them dance harder. The music was superb. I had no idea Grand Rapids had that much electronic music talent [...]

Rapid GrowthBe sure to check out today’s issue of Rapid Growth Media for a wonderfully written piece on our little company. Don’t navigate away without reading the piece on the Beerhorst Family. I had the pleasure of meeting Brenda Beerhorst on the Uptown trolley a few weeks ago while attempting to be the makeshift tour guide. We are flattered that Tom Mulligan, Brian Kelly, and the rest of the Rapid Growth Media team took some time to learn a bit about our company.
