Update: This property is just about ready for new residents. A great deal of work was done to the structure to level the floors on the main level. Supports were added, beams were replaced, and the entire house was jacked up (in the literal sense…not the slang sense). As the things leveled out, walls and floors cracked and were repaired. Things are greatly improved now.

Keep it local this holiday!
Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
Here we are a week and a half away from the infamous Black Friday and two weeks from Cyber Monday. As we sift through our closets to see what we can re-gift, look at the naughty list to see who we can skimp on, and analyze the budget and credit card limits to see what we can spend, now is the perfect time to commit to keeping our holiday spending local. I know it can be tough to resist a good, old-fashioned stampede at the Wal-Mart at 5 am on a brisk post-Thanksgiving morning, but consider the benefits of buying your gifts at our fine local retailers (from Local First).

East Hills Trees Project
Written Under For Tenants, Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
Long-time East Hills neighborhood resident Carol Moore has been working hard on the East Hills Trees Project. If you live in the neighborhood or have visited lately, you may have noticed the blue metal tags on all the trees in the public right-of-way throughout the neighborhood. These tags were placed while Bartlett Tree Experts were taking inventory of the trees in East Hills. The inventory included documenting the species, health, size, and monetary value of each tree in the district. When added up, the value of the trees in East Hills is more than $4 million!
The inventory is very well documented in this map. If you live or work in the district, take some time to learn about the trees that keep your home or business shaded from the sun and rain and help covert our pollution into oxygen.
A full report on the East Hills Tree Project is available at [...]

Wealthy Heights
Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
A little more than a decade ago, a movement started in Wealthy Heights to save the homes and buildings from a wrecking-ball fate. Neighbors banded together and worked with South East Economic Development (SEED) to save the Wealthy Theatre from demolition, and it was re-opened in 1998 after a more than $2 million renovation. A Look Back: The Urban Pharm Office
Written Under Grand Rapids, Urban Pharm News by Ryan VanderMeer | 1 Comment
A trip over to the Wealthy St. Viget combined with our planning for painting our building got me thinking about our office’s history. I did a little digging, but could not find much. The current owner, James at American Realty, does not know much about the history. Most of our neighbors are somewhat new to the area and are also without much knowledge of the history. So, I had to put together the story based on records from Kent County and prior sales listings [...]

A few interesting takes on community development…
Written Under For Tenants, Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | 1 Comment
I’ve had the pleasant opportunity to speak with a few people lately about their efforts to build strong neighborhoods and sense of community where they live. So, I though I’d share some of the experiences of fellow Grand Rapidians in their ventures in order to encourage readers to do so themselves, give them ideas, and understand some of the successes and resistance that they have encountered [...]

Wealthy St. Soup Tasting Fundraiser
Written Under Grand Rapids, Urban Pharm News by Ryan VanderMeer | 1 Comment
We’ve had a few days now to let all of the soup digest and to reflect on the soup tasting fundraiser for the Wealthy Street Business Alliance (WSBA). Keep an eye out for the WSBA to release a new website in the coming months. Amy from Art of the Table was kind enough to update the business directory on the website today to tie us over in the meantime. Art of the Table, along with Founders Brewing Company, provided the drinks for the evening to help wash down the deliciousness. The Wealthy St. Bakery stepped up to provide a fine selection of breads to soak up the scrumptious soups [...]

On Saturday, March 21st, Urban Pharm will be joining community members and other businesses in Uptown at the soon-to-be-opened Electric Cheetah for a soup tasting fundraiser. More than a dozen restaurants, individuals, and other companies have signed up to make a soup for the event. Soups will be judged by a “celebrity” guest, and the winner will have their soup on the menu at the Electric Cheetah! Drinks will be provided, and the Wealthy St. Bakery will be donating breads to soak up the soupy goodness [...]
