artpeersI think this is awesome. In an effort to encourage support for local artists and encourage community, a group from the Wealthy Heights neighborhood has come up with ArtPeers. It will take place during the first weekend of ArtPrize, from September 25-27, in venues outside of the ArtPrize boundary. Artists will be paired with venues in Uptown (though other parts of GR aren’t out of the question) and will have their work displayed for everybody each day from 1 pm – 9 pm. Though there are currently no prizes, it will serve as an opportunity for both local venues and artists to participate in a large-scale art event that will coincide with events like ArtPrize, Destination 1111, Activesite, and the many other happenings. Grand Rapids is going to be glowing with art, and it will be glorious.

Though planning is still underway, there will be an online element. A blog about Grand Rapids art history is in the works, and will be built upon as time passes. Currently, venue surveying is underway, and artist registration will start Thursday August 13th. To register as a venue or artist, visit the ArtPeers website at www.artpeers.org. Spread the word to any venue or artist who may be interested, and tell EVERYBODY to get out and enjoy all of the great arts that Grand Rapids has to offer!

You can follow ArtPeers on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. Stay tuned to all of these sources for further updates!

Baxter Community CenterThe community is getting busier and busier lately in Baxter. This is awesome, and I know many people familiar with Baxter will agree with me.

First off, the Baxter Community Center is holding Baxter Community Connections on July 13th, from 9am to 5pm. People in the community can get free diabetes screening and attend seminars to get information about measles, nutrition, asthma management, and more. For the kids, there will be crafts, Freddie the Fire Truck, games, and numerous other activities.

Second, the Baxter Community Center is in need of non-perishable goods [...]

Continuing on a previous post from last month, I thought it would be nice to share some more efforts going on to encourage community in the Grand Rapids area.
Taft Place Apartments
Taft Place Apartments

I’ll start with something that has made a lot of people very proud. Last fall, we took over management of a 15 unit apartment building on Taft Ave. in Wyoming. We knew going into the project that the neighborhood has had problems with crime, and a few vacant buildings on the street contributed to a not-so-vibrant feel of the area. However, we felt as if remodeling the building and finding good residents would go a long way to anchoring a strong community on the north end of Taft Ave. Our building, Taft Place Apartments, was remodeled inside and out, and was fully occupied by mid fall 2008 [...]

Soup Tasting We’ve had a few days now to let all of the soup digest and to reflect on the soup tasting fundraiser for the Wealthy Street Business Alliance (WSBA). Keep an eye out for the WSBA to release a new website in the coming months. Amy from Art of the Table was kind enough to update the business directory on the website today to tie us over in the meantime. Art of the Table, along with Founders Brewing Company, provided the drinks for the evening to help wash down the deliciousness. The Wealthy St. Bakery stepped up to provide a fine selection of breads to soak up the scrumptious soups [...]

Soup TastingOn Saturday, March 21st, Urban Pharm will be joining community members and other businesses in Uptown at the soon-to-be-opened Electric Cheetah for a soup tasting fundraiser. More than a dozen restaurants, individuals, and other companies have signed up to make a soup for the event. Soups will be judged by a “celebrity” guest, and the winner will have their soup on the menu at the Electric Cheetah! Drinks will be provided, and the Wealthy St. Bakery will be donating breads to soak up the soupy goodness [...]

When I got there, there were 10+ cats hanging out on the porch. So, due to my love for cats, I took a bunch of pictures. It’s nice to see them looking out for the house while it’s vacant.
Work will begin shortly. They’re turning one of the rooms downstairs into a third bedroom. [...]
