ArtPeers Rolls Along…
Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
There have been a few developments with ArtPeers lately. T-Shirts are on sale for $10, and available at the Sparrows and our office. We will be getting more shirts to other venues in the area shortly. Proceeds (about $4/shirt) will help us buy a trolley (fingers crossed, they aren’t cheap) that will connect Uptown and downtown during the September 25-27 event. The shirts look pretty sweet too…
Speaking of other venues in the area, keep an eye out for the “Official Venue” posters throughout Uptown. They are not all out yet, getting close [...]

For Tenants: First Annual Urban Pharm Urban Farm Contest
Written Under For Tenants, Urban Pharm News by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
Update: The winners are in!
1st Place: Tanya at 839 Oakhill SE
2nd Place: Andrew and Rachel at 231 Warren SE
3rd Place: Derek and Lisa at 2000 Madison SE
Great work guys, and thanks to everybody else to planted some flowers and produce. You have added great value to your communities!
UPDATE 8/6/09: Tanya Walker moved into her home about a year and a half ago. At the time, the yard was nothing more than compacted dirt with the occasional weed. Since then, Tanya has transformed her yard into an urban oasis. She tilled the ground and planted grass. Unlike my grass skills, she was actually able to maintain the lawn and get grass growing. She brought in stones and created walkways and gardens in the front and back yards. A swimming pool and trampoline in the backyard give children in the neighborhood refuge from boredom. She is growing produce for her family and the neighbors. Solar lights [...]

East Hills Trees Project
Written Under For Tenants, Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
Long-time East Hills neighborhood resident Carol Moore has been working hard on the East Hills Trees Project. If you live in the neighborhood or have visited lately, you may have noticed the blue metal tags on all the trees in the public right-of-way throughout the neighborhood. These tags were placed while Bartlett Tree Experts were taking inventory of the trees in East Hills. The inventory included documenting the species, health, size, and monetary value of each tree in the district. When added up, the value of the trees in East Hills is more than $4 million!
The inventory is very well documented in this map. If you live or work in the district, take some time to learn about the trees that keep your home or business shaded from the sun and rain and help covert our pollution into oxygen.
A full report on the East Hills Tree Project is available at [...]

This place is pretty cool. I love the old brick structure, though it needs a lot of work. The upper two units have walk-out porches facing Straight. This place is only a 5 minute walk from GVSU downtown, and 10 minutes from downtown entertainment. The lower two units have [...]

My first trip on The Rapid
Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | Leave a Comment
On a rainy evening a couple weeks ago, a group of friends and I headed downtown on The Rapid for the Electronic Music Night. It was my first time riding on our bus system. I find myself telling others to take mass transit, yet I had never ridden the Rapid! [...]

Updated: ArtPeers
Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | 3 Comments
I think this is awesome. In an effort to encourage support for local artists and encourage community, a group from the Wealthy Heights neighborhood has come up with ArtPeers. It will take place during the first weekend of ArtPrize, from September 25-27, in venues outside of the ArtPrize boundary. Artists will be paired with venues in Uptown (though other parts of GR aren’t out of the question) and will have their work displayed for everybody each day from 1 pm – 9 pm. Though there are currently no prizes, it will serve as an opportunity for both local venues and artists to participate in a large-scale art event that will coincide with events like ArtPrize, Destination 1111, Activesite, and the many other happenings. Grand Rapids is going to be glowing with art, and it will be glorious.
Though planning is still underway, there will be an online element. A blog about Grand Rapids art history is in the works, and will be built upon as time passes. Currently, venue surveying is underway, and artist registration will start Thursday August 13th. To register as a venue or artist, visit the ArtPeers website at www.artpeers.org. Spread the word to any venue or artist who may be interested, and tell EVERYBODY to get out and enjoy all of the great arts that Grand Rapids has to offer!
You can follow ArtPeers on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook. Stay tuned to all of these sources for further updates!

Grand Rapids Electronic Music Night
Written Under Grand Rapids by Ryan VanderMeer | 2 Comments
Update: What a great night. A group of friends and I took the Rapid down to Rosa Parks Circle as the rain poured down. It just happened to be my first time on the Rapid, but more on that later. We thought the rain would have slowed people down, but it just made them dance harder. The music was superb. I had no idea Grand Rapids had that much electronic music talent [...]
